2021 Boulder shooting
Colorado
The gunman at the Boulder King Soopers was handcuffed with the handcuffs of the officer he had just killed.
On a Monday afternoon in March of 2021, a man began firing in the parking lot of a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder. There were more than a hundred people inside, some of them lined up at the pharmacy waiting for COVID vaccines. Ten were killed. Among them was Eric Talley, a Boulder police officer who had been with the department since 2010 and was one of the first three to arrive. He ran toward the gunfire and was shot. He was the last person killed. Officers fought the gunman in the store for twenty minutes, then pulled back, fearing an ambush. When they went in again, one shot him in the thigh, and he gave himself up. He was taken into custody using Talley's handcuffs. The governor ordered state flags to half-staff for ten days, one day for each victim. The store stayed closed for nearly a year and reopened with a mural at the entrance.
