Midwestern State University
Oklahoma
A man who survived the 1996 Everest disaster and the television host known as Dr. Phil both came out of this red brick campus in Wichita Falls.
Beck Weathers went to school here. He later became a mountain climber, and he was one of the people caught in the 1996 Everest disaster. Phil McGraw studied here too, the television host known as Dr. Phil. So did the novelist Larry McMurtry, and the writer John Edwards Williams, and John Tower, who became a United States senator. Jaret Reddick started the punk band Bowling for Soup and sang lead for it. The comedian JoAnne Worley of Laugh In came through as well. The place they all passed through calls itself the only public university in Texas focused on the liberal arts. Its campus runs about two hundred and fifty acres, with more than fifty buildings put up in matching red brick, tiled roofs, arched fronts. The mascot is the mustang. The long list of former students also runs deep into professional sport, football and soccer and basketball, a mixed martial artist, a cyclist.
This is the first of 2 parts. The rest runs about 2 minutes and is read to you as you drive past. Hear the whole piece.
