Moodna Creek
New York
At Salisbury Mills, the longest railroad trestle east of the Mississippi crosses this creek nearly two hundred feet overhead.
At Salisbury Mills, a small creek passes under the Moodna Viaduct, the longest and highest railroad trestle east of the Mississippi River. It opened in nineteen oh nine. The tracks run a hundred and ninety three feet above the water, and freight still crosses them. The creek itself is only about fifteen and a half miles long, from the spot west of Washingtonville where two smaller streams meet to the tidal marshes where it joins the Hudson. That makes it the longest stream contained entirely within Orange County. Its watershed pulls water from more than twenty communities, reaching as far inland as Warwick. For six of those miles, between Woodbury Creek and Old Forge Hill Road, the water gets rough enough for whitewater kayaking, with sections rated Class Two up to Class Four. Above the salt marshes, the state stocks the creek with brown and rainbow trout.
This is the first of 3 parts. The rest runs about 3 minutes and is read to you as you drive past. Hear the whole piece.
It is the longest and highest railroad trestle east of the Mississippi River as of December 2019 and is still in use.
