Piedmont, Wyoming
Wyoming
A Wyoming railroad camp ended up named after a region of northern Italy, because of who the founders had married.
The railroad men wanted to call this place Byrne, after Moses Byrne, who ran the wood and water station here. That name got dropped. There was already a station called Bryan west of Green River, and two similar names on one line was asking for trouble. So they looked to the families instead. Byrne's wives, Anne Beus and Catherine Cardon, and Charles Guild's wife, Marie Madeleine Cardon, all came from small towns in the Province of Turin, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Catherine and Marie Madeleine were sisters. The station became Piedmont. It started around eighteen sixty-seven as a tent camp for the graders cutting a roadbed up the mountain, a route full of sharp curves including a full horseshoe bend. Even at its busiest there were only about twenty homes. The Guilds opened a store. The town supported four saloons.

Both Byrne's wives, Anne Beus and Catherine Cardon, and Guild's wife, Marie Madeleine Cardon, were from small towns in the Province of Turin, part of the Piedmont region of northern Italy.
