culturehistoricalpeople

Queen's first American show didn't happen in New York or Los Angeles. It happened on a Catholic campus in northwest Denver, on the sixteenth of April, 1974. Jimi Hendrix had come through six years earlier. The school is Regis University, run by the Jesuits, and it started nowhere near Colorado. In 1877 a group of exiled Italian Jesuits opened a small college in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Seven years later the Bishop of Denver asked them to start another one, in Morrison, Colorado. In 1887 the two schools merged and moved here, under the name College of the Sacred Heart. The Regis name came in 1921, borrowed from John Francis Regis, a seventeenth-century Jesuit who worked with prostitutes and the poor in the mountains of southern France. Bill Murray attended and never graduated. The university gave him an honorary doctorate anyway, in 2007.
