Riesel, Texas

Texas

A town of about a thousand people voted to borrow twenty-five million dollars for its schools.

historical

In May of 2010, voters in Riesel approved a bond worth twenty-five million dollars for the local school district. The town had just over a thousand residents at the time. The money was meant for a new high school, an administration building, and softball and baseball fields. A new power plant had already pushed up the city's funds and its population. The place has been growing since it was settled somewhere around eighteen eighty. It has also been through three names. First it was Roddy. Then it was Prospect. The name it kept belongs to W. H. Riesel, one of the original settlers, who built a cotton gin there.
