In April of 2009, delegates gathered in a church in Bedford, Texas, and came out with a new denomination. The building is St. Vincent's Cathedral, a stripped-down modern Gothic church with a three-sided bell tower. Over five days, representatives ratified a constitution and canons for the Anglican Church in North America. They elected Robert Duncan, the bishop of Pittsburgh, as its first archbishop. The people in the room came from four dioceses and a long list of allied groups, including missionary convocations from Kenya, Uganda and the Southern Cone. Nine provinces of the worldwide Anglican Communion sent official representatives, from West Africa to Myanmar to Rwanda. Rick Warren, one of America's best-known evangelicals, addressed the assembly. So did Metropolitan Jonah Paffhausen, who led the Orthodox Church in America. The Archbishop of Canterbury did not come. He sent a retired bishop from the Seychelles to sit in the room and watch.
