Sugar Bowl Ski Resort

California

Goofy's famous holler started as an Austrian ski champion's yodel on these slopes.

historicalpeopleculture

Hannes Schroll yodeled constantly when he skied. He was an Austrian skiing champion who bought this mountainside in the late thirties and built a Tyrolean village on it, modeled on his hometown of Kitzbuhel. Walt Disney had taken ski lessons from Schroll down in Yosemite. When Schroll needed money to finish the resort, Disney handed him twenty five hundred dollars and became a shareholder. Schroll thanked him by renaming Hemlock Peak. It has been Mount Disney ever since. Then in 1941 the resort turned up in a Disney cartoon called The Art of Skiing, starring Goofy. Schroll is credited with the yodel Goofy makes in it. That sound became known as the Goofy holler.
