Swan River (New York)

New York

A stream barely fifteen feet wide holds one of only about six wild brook trout populations left on Long Island.

naturalfishinghistorical

Swan River is narrow enough to jump across in places. Less than fifteen feet wide, sandy on the bottom, cold and spring fed. Above Swan Lake, brook trout spawn in it naturally. That makes it one of roughly six known wild populations of the species anywhere on Long Island. It is also one of the few free flowing spring fed streams left on the island in something close to a natural state. Below Montauk Highway the water turns tidal, and in fall, from September into November, sea run brown trout gather there to spawn. The fishing is significant at the county level. There is no formal public access to any of it. The stream runs through undeveloped forested wetland, then past road construction, houses along the bank, and a commercial sand mining operation, before emptying into Patchogue Bay.
