Inside Wesleyan University in Middletown sits a film archive holding the personal papers and film materials of Ingrid Bergman, Frank Capra, Clint Eastwood, Federico Fellini, Elia Kazan, Martin Scorsese, Raoul Walsh and John Waters. Scholars and biographers from around the world get full access. The film studies program that built all this is led by the historian Jeanine Basinger. In 2008, Vanity Fair looked at the school and wrote that this tiny Connecticut university, with a total enrollment of twenty seven hundred, had turned out a shockingly disproportionate number of Hollywood movers and shakers. Variety said much the same thing the same year, crediting Basinger for the crowd of graduates then working in Hollywood. In 2013 the university folded the department, the archives and its film series into a new College of Film and the Moving Image.
