historicalpeople

The man who wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence had been dead more than forty years before this town took his name. George Campbell Childress was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and he was the principal author of that declaration. The county and the city that carry his name were both incorporated more than four decades after he died. The city was established in eighteen eighty-seven and incorporated in eighteen ninety. About fifty-seven hundred people live here now. Walter Chrysler lived in Childress too, though only for a year, from nineteen oh five to nineteen oh six, long before there was a car company with his name on it. The broadcaster Lou Dobbs came from here. So did the librarian and educator Margaret A. Edwards, the rancher Minnie Lou Bradley, and Roy Furr, who founded a restaurant chain and spent his youth in Childress County.
