A man from this small Texas town is credited with saving Chartres Cathedral during World War Two.

peoplemilitaryhistorical

Welborn Griffith grew up in a town of a couple thousand people in north Texas. During World War Two he became an American officer, and his name is attached to one of the war's stranger rescues. At the battle of Chartres, in France, he was instrumental in saving the cathedral there. The source of that claim is plain about it. He was the reason the building came through. He is not the only name the town keeps. Edward Givens, astronaut, came from here. So did Fred C. Koch, a chemical engineer who founded Koch Industries. Bill Evans earned a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for valor in the same war, then went on to play professional baseball into the nineteen fifties. Judy Buenoano was a serial killer, executed in Florida's electric chair. Actress Juli Reding, radio broadcaster John Gilliland, and writers Bill Neal and Clay Reynolds round out the list.
