A World Cup qualifier here was played in a blizzard, and the losing team filed a protest with FIFA over the state of the field.
In March of 2013, Costa Rica came to Commerce City to play the United States in a qualifier for the 2014 World Cup. Snow fell hard enough that the field markings vanished under it. The United States won one to nothing. Costa Rica protested to FIFA over the field conditions and lost the appeal. The match is remembered in soccer lore as the SnowClasico. The stadium sits just over five thousand two hundred feet up, the highest elevation of any ground regularly used by Major League Soccer. The Colorado Rapids moved in when it opened in 2007, and Herculez Gomez scored the first goal there. Rugby, lacrosse championships and music festivals have all filled the grounds since. The band Phish has run a residency here nearly every Labor Day weekend since 2011, stretched to four nights in 2022.

Costa Rica filed a protest with FIFA due to field conditions when the United States won the game 1–0, but the protest was denied. The game has already been dubbed in football lore as "SnowClásico" for the conditions.
