Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of the Rockies
Colorado
The marble gods inside this Colorado temple were carved by hand in Jaipur, India, and shipped here.
On a hill with a view of both the mountains and the plains sits a temple whose statues were made eight thousand miles away. The marble deities were carved in Jaipur, India. The granite image of Venkateshwara came from Tirupati. Seven shrines stand in the main prayer hall, with a walking path circling them. Shiva and Parvati are there, along with Durga, Rama and Sita, Radha and Krishna, and Saraswati. Out front there is a granite Shiva-Linga with Nandi, and an image of Ganesha. Most temples pick a tradition and stay in it. This one deliberately did not. Vishnu appears twice, once in the southern form worshipped at Tirupati and once in the northern form. Jagannath represents the east. Ayappa is popular in Kerala. Subramanya is popular in Tamil Nadu. All of them share the same floor. No alcohol, tobacco, or meat comes through the door.
This is the first of 2 parts. The rest runs about 2 minutes and is read to you as you drive past. Hear the whole piece.
The deities were carved in marble at Jaipur, India, except for the Venkateswara granity image was carved at Tirupati.
