Post University
Connecticut
A school that started out teaching typing and bookkeeping in Waterbury counts a former president of Paraguay among its graduates.
The alumni list at Post University in Waterbury takes a turn. One name on it is Mario Abdo Benitez, a former president of Paraguay. Another is Jazmin Benitez, a professional wrestler who works under the ring name Mercedes Martinez. There is also the adjutant general of the Vermont National Guard, a former mayor of Waterbury, and two members of the Connecticut House of Representatives. The place they came through began in 1890, offering training in typing, bookkeeping, and business writing. In 1897 a man named Harry C. Post bought it, renamed it Waterbury Business College, and made himself its first principal. His name stuck to the school even after his did not. It became Post College in 1931, moved to Country Club Road in 1965, and only became a four-year institution in 1976, when it started building accelerated degree programs to get Vietnam veterans through college.
