Quinnipiac won its first national championship in any sport ten seconds into overtime.
In 2023, the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team beat Minnesota three to two for the national title. The winning goal came ten seconds into overtime. It was the first NCAA national championship the school had ever won, in any sport. The program had been building toward it for years under coach Rand Pecknold. It cracked the top ten of the national polls for the first time in the 2009 to 2010 season. Three years later it sat at number one for stretches of the season and reached the Frozen Four, then lost the championship game to rival Yale. In 2016 the team got back to the Frozen Four and lost the final again, this time to North Dakota. The team plays at an arena that cost fifty-two million dollars and opened in 2007. Quinnipiac fields seven men's varsity sports and fourteen women's. There is no football team.
